The birth of this watch was inspired by a heart-to-heart conversation between Mr. Richard Mille and the brand’s best friend Fernando Alonso. Alonso is a two-time Formula One world champion and a lover of Eastern culture, especially samurai culture.
This new watch breaks through the barriers of creativity and occupies a place in RICHARD MILLE’s watch series known for its “decorative” and “ornamental value”. The samurai armor is hand-carved by sculptor Pierre-Alain Lozeron, while his wife Valérie Lozeron is responsible for drawing patterns and paying attention to details to ensure the origin of the design of the samurai armor. The lifelike 3N gold armor is reminiscent of the gold leaf elements used to decorate the most sacred temples and some traditional crafts in ancient Japan.
Many details in the watch refer to the Asano family crest – the family is a symbol of the Japanese Bushido spirit. At the beginning of the 18th century, Asano Naganori, the “Daimyo” of the family domain and the feudal lord, was also the lord followed by forty-seven ronin. After avenging the death of the lord, these ronin decided to follow the lord and die. In Japan, each samurai family has its own family crest. The tourbillon decorated with the Asano family crest is located at the 6 o’clock position of the watch. This family crest consisting of two intersecting eagle feathers symbolizes the strength of the war and the authority of the lord. It is also finely engraved on the small wings of the samurai helmet. The crown is made of titanium, Carbon TPT® and polished 3N gold, and is decorated with a Japanese maple leaf pattern. Maple leaves symbolize the change of seasons, beauty and elegance, as well as the brevity and splendor of life. At the bottom, two knives are engraved in sheaths with the blades pointing upward so that they can be quickly drawn out in the face of danger.
As a dual art fusion of sculpture and engraving, the production of samurai armor requires patience, meticulousness, dexterity and enthusiasm. “There are many similarities between the knife and the chisel, between the sharp edge and the precisely positioned incisions of the carver’s skill, and one cannot help but think of the resonance between the practice of bushido and the craftsman’s craftsmanship,” says Pierre-Alain Lozeron. After more than 16 hours of meticulous engraving and 9 hours of drawing – it took more than a full day to create the 11 parts of the “Samurai”, and seamlessly embedded them into the RM 47 tourbillon watch movement.
The samurai armor is like a guard, providing loyal protection for the RM47 manual winding movement with hour and minute displays. The base plate and hollow bridge plate are both made of grade 5 titanium alloy treated with black PVD. This is an alloy material commonly used in the aerospace industry. It has high biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, hardness and surface smoothness. It can ensure that the movement runs smoothly.
The movement, case and decoration of the RM 47 watch all reflect the design concept of harmonious integration of various elements. The barrel-shaped case is composed of three parts, including a 3N gold middle case, a black TZP ceramic bezel and a bottom cover. With its outstanding aesthetic expression, the RM 47 tourbillon watch symbolizes the persistent pursuit of excellence and respect for tradition.
